HOT MIX ASPHALT WHAT IS HOT MIX ASPHALT? Hot mix asphalt may be referred to by several names. In different sections of the state it may also be referred to as bituminous concrete, hot plant mix, asphalt concrete, blacktop or Superpave. Hot mix asphalt is composed of aggregate bound together into a solid mass by asphalt cement. The aggregates total

Control all operations in the handling, preparation, and production of the asphalt mix so that the percent asphalt binder content and the percents passing the No. 8 and No. 200 sieves will meet the targets from the mix design within the tolerances shown in Table 334-14.
Gap-graded (stone matrix asphalt (SMA)) is a type of mix usually reserved for high-traffic and truck volumes on interstates and primary roads. These mixes generally cost more due to the strict aggregate requirements, higher asphalt cement contents, and the specialized asphalt plant equipment required.
In addition, some specifications allow lowering the optimum asphalt content from mix design by 0.3 to 0.5 percent for field adjustments. Lowering asphalt content in the field often means our pavements are under-asphalted or dry. This can lead to early raveling and cracking since the binder serves as the glue.
The Standard Specifications for the Construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects (FP) is issued primarily for constructing roads and bridges on Federal Highway projects under the direct administration of the Federal Highway Administration. It is also used by the U. S. Forest Service and other Federal agencies on their projects.
Section 39 Asphalt Concrete 4-3901 General. Section 39, “Asphalt Concrete,” of the Standard Specifications provides material and construction requirements for hot mix asphalt (HMA) including Type A, rubberized hot mix asphalt-gap graded (RHMA-G), open-graded friction course (OGFC), minor HMA, and hot mix asphalt with warm mix asphalt (WMA) additive technology.
Perform quality control tests to control the asphalt concrete mix within the specifications. Ensure that these quality control tests measure the asphalt binder content, gradation, air voids, and Maximum Specific Gravity (MSG) according to the Contractor ’s approved QCP.
